Gilbert Mason was raised in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned a bachelor's degree from Tennessee State College in 1950 and a medical degree frm Howard University in 1954 before opening a practice in Biloxi, Mississippi. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Dr. Mason led several wade-ins to desegregate Mississippi's Gulf Coast beaches; he also participated in a lawsuit to integrate Biloxi public schools.
